{"id":2039,"date":"2018-11-28T12:01:09","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T17:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.collectionsmax.com\/?page_id=2039"},"modified":"2026-01-09T11:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T16:37:15","slug":"troubleshooting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.collectionsmax.com\/index.php\/troubleshooting","title":{"rendered":"Troubleshooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Problem:<\/strong> \u00a0 Collections MAX fails to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Solution<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> 1.\u00a0 First try to uninstall the software from either the start menu or the control panel.\u00a0 Then download the software and reinstall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The free components of Collections MAX like Collections MAX Administrator, Scheduler, or Collector can be found in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collectionsmax.com\/index.php\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">downloads<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> page.\u00a0 The paid versions of our software like Collections MAX Professional or Collections MAX Update Utility can be found on our portal website at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collectionsmaxlicenses.com\">collectionsmaxlicenses.com<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.\u00a0 Try temporarily disabling your Anti Virus Software.\u00a0 Then try running the program.\u00a0 If the software runs you will need to make an exception in your Anti Virus software for the program.\u00a0 If you are using an anti virus program like WebRoot you will need to disable their Active Shield feature as this injects a program into our process space and causes our software to terminate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0 Disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) on Windows or make an exception.\u00a0 Data Execution Prevention sometimes inteferes with our software in locked down corporate environments.\u00a0 There are a few ways that you can disable or add an exception for our programs.\u00a0 \u00a0Please visit the website below for more information about making exceptions to DEP or only having it on for Windows processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thegeekpage.com\/how-to-enable-or-disable-data-execution-prevention-dep-on-windows-10-11\/\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">https:\/\/thegeekpage.com\/how-to-enable-or-disable-data-execution-prevention-dep-on-windows-10-11\/<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4.\u00a0 Defrag your hard disk.\u00a0 Sometimes if the hard disk is extremely fragmented it cannot read the assembly correctly and will cause the software to crash and display the errors in a pop up box.\u00a0 If this happens either use Windows own disk defragmenter or download the Iobit Smart Defrag from the internet and use the slowest Defrag and Prioritize option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5.\u00a0 Do a System Restore.\u00a0 Sometimes Windows updates can cause the software to crash.\u00a0 Do a system restore to a restore point when the software was working correctly.\u00a0 You can find information online about how to do a system restore for your version of\u00a0 Windows using Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Problem:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Collections MAX closes abruptly after login or flashes on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Most Likely Cause:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are missing important Windows Updates or the .NET Framework is corrupt.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In most cases, these errors can be easily avoided by installing Important Windows Updates.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open Windows Update. From Start menu, type &#8220;Windows Update,&#8221; or open Control Panel\\System and Security\\Windows Update.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click &#8220;Check for Updates&#8221; on the left.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Install all Important Updates and reboot.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Please repeat Steps 1-3 until all Important Updates are installed. If you have not installed Windows Updates recently, you may have several consecutive updates ready. Specifically, Collections MAX requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Retry the program to see if this repaired the issue. If it did not, or you received an error, please proceed.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before proceeding you will want to see the actual cause of why the program was terminated.\u00a0 This is done using Windows Event Viewer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you have errors that relate to mscorlib.dll or kernelbase.dll 99% of the time those are .net framework errors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is a tutorial for using the Window Event Viewer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/forums\/t\/40108\/how-to-use-event-viewer\/\">https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/forums\/t\/40108\/how-to-use-event-viewer\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Framework errors occurs when Microsoft&#8217;s .NET Framework is unable to be installed or updated, usually due to a corrupt file or setting in a previously installed version of the Framework.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our software requires the Microsoft .NET Framework, which is developed, serviced and supported by Microsoft, so issues with .NET may prevent Collections MAX from installing or operating correctly.\u00a0 For your convenience, we have collected some of Microsoft&#8217;s basic troubleshooting steps below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>You received a\u00a0 System.Management Exception<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Example: at System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most likely Windows WMI is corrupted.\u00a0 Below are links that will point you in the right direction for fixing it.\u00a0 You can also try to do a System Restore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/how-to-repair-or-rebuild-the-wmi-repository-on-windows-10\">https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/how-to-repair-or-rebuild-the-wmi-repository-on-windows-10<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuallyboring.com\/microsoft-wmi-invalid-class-error-0x80041010\/\">https:\/\/www.virtuallyboring.com\/microsoft-wmi-invalid-class-error-0x80041010\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clear the Auto Update Cache<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Run the following commands in an Administrator command prompt on the machine.\u00a0 Then uninstall the Collections MAX software, reboot the machine and reinstall it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Please note:\u00a0 Make sure these commands are run one at a time.\u00a0 Hit enter after each command and make sure they are run in an Adminstrator command prompt.\u00a0 Usually the first command will not show any notification after the cache is cleared.\u00a0 The second command might say &#8220;The system cannot find the file specified&#8221;.\u00a0 This is normal too as we have two different versions of the Auto Update system.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rmdir \/s \/q \"%userprofile%\\wc\"\r\n\r\nrmdir \/s \/q \"%userprofile%\\wc\"rmdir \/s \/q \"%appdata%\\wyUpdate AU\"\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If these steps do not resolve the issue, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/contactus\/\">contact Microsoft<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> for further assistance with this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repairing .NET<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Microsoft recommends using these steps to repair problems in the .NET Framework before attempting any further troubleshooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=30135\">Download the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Select &#8220;<strong>NetFxRepairTool.exe<\/strong>&#8221; if prompted to choose a download.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After the download completes, open <strong>NetFxRepairTool.exe<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You will need to accept Microsoft&#8217;s license agreements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The tool will suggest possible fixes. Click &#8220;<strong>Next<\/strong>&#8221; to apply them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Continue following the prompts until the issue appears to be resolved.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When done, click the &#8220;<strong>Finish<\/strong>&#8221; button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"note\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> For full documentation, please see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/2698555\/microsoft-net-framework-repair-tool-is-available\">Microsoft&#8217;s article <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/dotnet\/archive\/2014\/04\/28\/introducing-the-microsoft-net-framework-repair-tool.aspx\">blog post<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Retry the program to see if this repaired the issue. If it did not, or you received an error, proceed to Solution 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Solution 2: Uninstalling .NET<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the repair function did not fix the issue, Microsoft recommends reinstalling .NET Framework. It is recommended to start with the highest version currently installed and work your way backward to .NET Framework 1.x.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Step 1<\/span><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open the Control Panel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click on &#8220;Programs&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Choose &#8220;Uninstall a program&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Locate &#8220;Microsoft .NET Framework&#8221; in the list; there may be multiple entries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Select the highest version present.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click &#8220;Uninstall\/Change&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the .NET Installer opens, choose &#8220;Remove&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repeat these steps for all versions, highest to lowest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Step 2B<\/span><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Reinstall .NET Framework: \u00a0<\/strong>Links to ALL versions of the .NET Framework can be found on the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itechtics.com\/net-framework-versions-offline-installers\/\">webpage.<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Retry the program to see if this repaired the issue. If it did not, or you received an error, proceed to Solution 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Solution 3: Using the .NET Cleanup Tool<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We have found that the official Microsoft instructions (Steps 1-2) do not always resolve .NET issues, but the following steps have proven effective in many cases. These are not official steps provided by Microsoft, but they are developed and maintained by <\/span>Aaron Stebner<span style=\"color: #000000;\">, who helped develop .NET Framework 1.x-3.5. <strong>Use at your own risk.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>Using the .NET Cleanup Tool<\/p>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Download <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.majorgeeks.com\/files\/details\/microsoft_net_framework_cleanup_tool.html\">the .NET Cleanup Tool<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> from Aaron&#8217;s blog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open the Zip file and copy the &#8220;cleanup_tool.exe&#8221; to your Desktop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open &#8220;cleanup_tool.exe&#8221; and accept the user agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Select &#8220;Cleanup All Versions&#8221; (default) and click &#8220;Cleanup Now&#8221;.<\/span>\n<ul>This takes a while, but may appear to be frozen for several minutes. Please do not interrupt the process.<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If cleanup is successful, restart the computer and reinstall all versions of the .NET framework that you uninstalled. If cleanup fails, or if you have difficulty following these instructions, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/contactus\/\">contact Microsoft<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> or your computer manufacturer for further assistance from a certified Microsoft technician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Links to ALL versions of the .NET Framework can be found on the following<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itechtics.com\/net-framework-versions-offline-installers\/\">webpage.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can also find the problem in the Event Viewer and take a screenshot of it and send to support.\u00a0 We will be happy to try to diagnose it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Nuclear Option.\u00a0 This is the last resort.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is a Windows restore option that will reinstall the operating system and then you can run Windows updates to see if that fixes it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the computers running Professional I would first remove the licenses using the License Delete Utility found in the downloads section of your web portal at <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collectionsmaxlicenses.com\">collectionsmaxlicenses.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For computers running the Update Utility you can log into the Utility and in the top menu click Tools \/ Remove License from this machine.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t access your Update Utility software then please open a support ticket and we will work with you to reset that key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then follow these instructions on the webpage below.\u00a0 A clean install might be the only way to fix it especially if any of the computers was upgraded to the new version of windows before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techadvisor.co.uk\/how-to\/windows\/how-reinstall-windows-3535423\/\">https:\/\/www.techadvisor.co.uk\/how-to\/windows\/how-reinstall-windows-3535423\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span id=\"vm\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Detected Virtual Machine!<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On some software titles like Collections MAX Professional our software license prohibits running in a virtual machine.\u00a0 However sometimes there are settings in Windows or programs that are installed that interfere with our software and you will get a Detected Virtual Machine! popup when trying to run our software under them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.collectionsmax.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/virtmchine.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first thing to look for on the computer are Virtual machine programs like VM Ware and Virtual Box.\u00a0 Uninstall them including Virtual Box Guest additions if installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reboot the computer and try starting the software again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you still have issues possibly one of these two things below could be it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>QUICK FIX FOR WINDOWS\u00a0 11.<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Type <strong>CMD<\/strong> in your start menu search box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Right click on command prompt and select &#8220;Run As Administrator&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Type in the following in the command prompt window or use copy and paste:\u00a0 <strong>bcdedit \/set hypervisorlaunchtype off<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then hit enter.\u00a0 You should see something that says &#8220;The operation completed successfully&#8221;.\u00a0 Close out the command prompt window.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NOTE:<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Step by step instructions for the above can be found at the following webpage: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/disable-hyper-v-windows-11\/\">https:\/\/www.xda-developers.com\/disable-hyper-v-windows-11\/<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In your control panel go to Device Security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you cannot find this in the control panel just type core isolation in your start menu search box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then click Core Isolation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then click to turn off Memory Integrity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If Firmware Protection &#8211; Defender System Guard is listed and set to on make sure to turn it off.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reboot the machine.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Possibly Windows Hyper V is installed or enabled on the computer.\u00a0 Please see the following link to see how to turn it off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/troubleshoot\/windows-client\/application-management\/virtualization-apps-not-work-with-hyper-v\">https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/troubleshoot\/windows-client\/application-management\/virtualization-apps-not-work-with-hyper-v\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To turn off Hyper V in Windows 11.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/windows-11-disable-hyper-v\/\">https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/windows-11-disable-hyper-v\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can turn off virtulization in the BIOS of the computer.\u00a0 The settings will vary from one bios manufacturer to the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenforum.com\/t\/enable-or-disable-cpu-virtualization-in-uefi-bios-firmware-settings-on-windows-pc.4928\/\">https:\/\/www.elevenforum.com\/t\/enable-or-disable-cpu-virtualization-in-uefi-bios-firmware-settings-on-windows-pc.4928\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Utility that shows you what is being detected can be downloaded from the url below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/CollectionsMAXDownloads\/products\/collectionsmax\/VMTest.zip\">https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/CollectionsMAXDownloads\/products\/collectionsmax\/VMTest.zip<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem: \u00a0 Collections MAX fails to start.
